Denman Prospect Community Garden Rules

1. These Garden Rules govern access to, and use of, the Community Garden.  Terms not defined in the Garden Rule are as defined in the DENMAN PROSPECT COMMUNITY GARDEN TERMS OF USE.

2.  Access Restrictions

a) No pets or domestic animals (including dogs and cats) are permitted in the Community Garden.  Exceptions are made only for trained assistance animals as defined by law.  Maintaining and/or keeping livestock (including poultry) is not permitted.

b) The Community Garden is open daily during hours posted on the main gate (Open Hours).  These hours are subject to change at the discretion of the Company, without prior written notice to Participants. 

c) Participants must vacate the Community Garden by the closing time specified. 

d) Unauthorised access outside the Open Hours will be considered trespassing. 

3. Community Garden Volunteers

a)  The operation of the Community Garden will be managed by Community Garden Volunteers.  All questions about Plot availability, Plot allocation, waiting lists or general garden use must be directed to the Community Garden Volunteers. 

b)  Participants may contact the Community Garden Volunteers by emailing denmanprospectcommunitygarden@gmail.com.

c)  Participants must treat the Community Garden Volunteers with courtesy.

4.  Access Codes, Plot and Locker Allocation

a) The Community Garden Volunteers are responsible for Plot allocation and will maintain a register of Plot holders, vacant plots and allocate lockers. Participants must inform the Community Garden Volunteers when Plots or lockers are no longer required and ensure any keys are returned when they no longer have a Plot in the Community Garden. 

b) Plots and lockers cannot be transferred between participants of the Community Garden without the approval of the Community Garden Volunteers. 

c) A Participant will be allocated Plot(s), at the discretion of the Community Garden Volunteers. 

d)  Lockers are provided for temporary storage of gardening tools and equipment only.  Personal locks must not be fitted to lockers.  The Community Garden Volunteers may remove or cut any personal locks fitted to lockers without notice.

e) Lockers must be kept clean, secure and clearly labelled with the Participant’s name and plot number.  Food and personal valuables must not be stored in the lockers. 

f) Participants must not interfere with other Plots, lockers, or property of other Participant’s of the Community Garden. It is the responsibility of the Participant leaving the Community Garden to lock gates and sheds.

5.  Conduct in the Community Garden

a) Non-organic pesticides, herbicides or inorganic fertilisers are not to be used.  Use of rat poison and bates is banned.

b) Participants will not grow produce for commercial sale or engage in other commercial activities at the Community Garden.

c)  Non wildlife friendly animal netting and plastic weed mats are not permitted.

d) The Participant must not remove any equipment, tools, and/or gardening materials from the Community Garden without the express permission of the Company or Community Garden Volunteers.

e) Damage to, or unauthorised removal of garden equipment should be reported immediately to the Community Garden Volunteers and, where necessary, reported to the appropriate authority.

f) The Participant must not store any flammable or explosive substances at the Community Garden, unless consent is granted by the Company.

g) The Participant must minimise noise and impact on neighbors and the general public. 

h) The Participant must maintain the Community Garden in a clean and tidy manner.  The Participant must:

    i) remove all hazards promptly and pack away all equipment, tools and/or gardening materials when not in use;

   ii) keep their Plot (and the area around their Plot) clean and tidy and free from debris, dry herbage, rubbish and other unsightly or offensive materials;

  iii) compost or dispose of green waste responsibly;

  iv) not burn any rubbish or any other material in the Community Garden; 

  v) use water efficiently with reference to any water restrictions, relevant laws and instructions from the Community Garden Volunteers.

i) The Participant must not:

   i) light any fires or engage in burn off activities;

   ii) consume alcohol, any illicit substances, smoke or vape in the Community Garden;

  iii) plant, cultivate or harvest any illicit substances or prohibited plants (including cannabis) in the Community Garden.

6) Use of facilities

a) The Community Garden is a shared space. 

b) Participants must not book or reserve the BBQ area facilities, and may not host or organise parties, functions, meetings, workshops or events of any kind. 

c) The Participant may only prepare or cook food in the BBQ area installed for that purpose.  The Participant will clean and tidy the BBQ area after use.

d) The Participant must only use facilities for their proper purpose. 

e)  Any damage caused by the Participant to the facilities may be passed on to the Participant.

7)  Abandoned Plots, Reallocation of Plots

a) If in the reasonable opinion of the Community Garden Volunteers, the Plot has not been maintained or activity cultivated for a period of 30 days, the Community Garden Volunteers may carry out basic maintenance on the plot at its discretion (including harvesting and weeding) for the remainder of the current licence term to prevent the plot from being unsafe or unsightly. Any produce collected from an abandoned Plot may be donated at the discretion of the Community Garden Volunteers.
