Weed spraying and clearing works
We're taking action to protect Denman Prospect from invasive blackberries, with weed spraying and removal to begin shortly.
Spraying will begin in Stromlo Reach and progress towards John Gorton Drive, before moving towards Evelyn Scott School. The program is due to begin in early to mid-March and will take around two months to complete.
These target areas are home to various invasive weed species, including blackberries, which not only threaten the natural environment but also heighten the risk of bushfires. Government approval has been granted to undertake weed management operations in these locations.
We've enlisted a contractor from the ACT Government Parks & Conservation Services weeds panel who is well-versed in working within high conservation value zones like those in and around Denman Prospect.
Herbicides in use will include Brush Off, Garlon, and GRAZON DS, along with a wetting agent such as Devour or Pulse, and a non-toxic biodegradable red Herbi Dye.
An important part of this process involved consulting an ecologist to survey the area for native species, including wombats, to safeguard their habitats during the weed control operations.
Markings in the vicinity delineate ecologically sensitive and protected zones, including Boxgum woodland, pink-tailed worm lizard habitats, and active burrows.
For your safety, please refrain from crossing flagged areas and avoid picking blackberries while in the vicinity. Stay updated on weed spraying progress across the ACT through the online mapping tool.
